Sculptor | Kirsty Armstrong
I have been a working sculptor since 1988 after getting my BA (hons) Fine Art Degree, specialising in sculpture.
Kirsty Armstrong is my maiden and ‘sculpting’ name, but I also go by my married name of Kirsty Kenny. After spending four years at college studying, I’ve been lucky enough to have been a sculptor ever since.
During this time I have worked for several figurine manufacturing companies including Border Fine Arts, Country artists and Beswick, but after 15 years of sculpting originals for other people I decided it was time to work on my own ideas again.
This has led to me presenting HRH Prince Charles with no.1 of my limited edition Red Squirrel sculpture; ‘Charles’, in 2011; to designing and producing the RSST (Red Squirrel Survival Trust) Volunteer of the year 2012 and 2014 awards; to winning a competition set by the North Pennines AONB to design and go on to produce ‘The Pendlebury award’ in 2013. I have produced the trophies for an extreme obstacle course challenge; Gelt Gladiator, which was held in Cumbria in May 2015, and I have also produced four limited edition Mk XV1e Spitfires which were cast in pewter. As a sculptor, I supply several galleries and shops with my own original pieces and I also have two online shops; ‘Just Kirsty’ on Folksy and etsy.
I am heavily involved in the fight to protect the UK’s endangered native Red Squirrel and I am a co-founder, a trustee, the treasurer, a volunteer and fund raiser for our local Red Squirrel group which is now a charity. I also love music, and sing in a two piece band called ‘Halcyon’…we’ve also just begun to write our own songs which we are recording.
Going it alone has certainly increased my creativity….I now just need to discover a way to fit more hours into the day so that I can turn all my ideas into sculptures!
