My newest Red Squirrel wall sculpture, ‘Maple’, is now in production in cold cast bronze. She’s the first in a series of wall sculpture busts from the new ‘HEADS UP! range. They are made here in the north of England, and most importantly, they are designed, sculpted and produced entirely by hand.

Say hello to Erik Otter, one of the most recent wildlife sculptures from my northern-England studio. This detailed sculpture captures a young European otter pup (Eurasian Otter – Lutra lutra) in rich, lifelike form: hand painted in warm chocolate browns and soft golden sand tones, Erik stands approx 14″ (35 cm) tall — life-size for a 3-4 month old young otter.

Every piece is entirely handmade in the UK. I start each new piece with a wax original sculpted by hand using traditional sculpting techniques. Subsequently, after moulding, each piece is cast in high-quality white resin, and finally hand-painted. This British hand made sculpture distinguishes himself from mass-produced figurines.

At the moment, I have one painted Erik ready to ship in my studio (April 2026) for the price of £465 (plus delivery). The *UK shipping charge is £33 for Royal Mail tracked and insured delivery in purpose-built packaging.  The price of the shipping reflected Erik’s price, as well as his weight (approx 7.5 kg packed) and his size. International delivery options available on request.

About the artist…

I have been working as a figurative sculptor for almost 40 years, practicing only traditional sculpting techniques. My wildlife pieces are rooted in careful anatomical observation and expressive sculpting, sculpted and finished in my rural Cumbria studio. The moulds and casts are produced for me by a specialist company based in the Cumbrian Lake District. My range spans life-size sculptures to more intimate pieces, all crafted with a passion for British wildlife.

He is the life-size of a four month old Otter pup. He is set on a Shetland beach, complete with sand and shells. ‘Erik’ is being hand made to order in a choice of finishes, in Cumbria, in the far north of England.

The availability of my limited edition Harriet Hare sculptures is drawing to a close.

There are currently just two remaining in cold-cast iron, as well as three Artist’s copies in a choice of finishes, and then that’s it! The remaining Hare sculptures of the 150 piece limited edition have all been sold.

It will be rather strange not making this particular Hare sculpture anymore! She has been one of my main product lines for seven years.  Please do get in touch if you would like to secure one of these last Hares before they all

It’s a life-size Wren sculpture, which will be perched on a wooden stump.

How is it made…?

Firstly, I made a quick ‘maquette’, which is a 3D sketch in wax. This helps with the composition and scale of the piece. I then used an actual Wren’s skull and beak as the armature for the head. After adding ball bearings for the eyes, I ‘fleshed’ out the head shape with wax.

The blocking out of the shapes and getting the proportions right is next. When I’m happy with his expression and the composition, I’ll start to add detail.

Once finished, the piece will be produced as a limited edition, and will then be available from my Just Kirsty Sculpture & Gifts Shop on the British Craft House. You’ll also be able to find it from my SHOP Page

The end of an era…

The new GPSR regulations came into force yesterday, with the potential for huge new costs and time consuming red tape for small businesses like mine. Due to a clashing Etsy shipping area policy, this has ultimately led me to close my long established Etsy shop. The end of an era.

The future…

So, from today, all my products are now only available from my ‘Just Kirsty Sculpture & Gifts’ store on the British Craft House. I’ve had a shop with this wonderful online selling platform for the past 5 years now (and they don’t have a clashing shipping area policy…).

A Wren Sculpture…

Most of my working day is spent casting, polishing, finishing and packing up orders. Now that the Christmas rush is calming down, I feel a strong urge to sculpt a new piece. A Wren sculpture!

This morning I started to look through the Wren references material I’ve been gathering and had an idea… what if I could find an intact Wren’s skull? I could use it as the perfect armature for the head! I found one (on Etsy, of all places!) I’ll sculpt the detail in wax over the top of the skull, and also recreate the body entirely in modelling wax. The little Wren will be brought back to life!

Now, I also need to keep a look out for a little piece of weathered fence post for her to perch on… Updates soon!

The wax original is now in the process of being moulded by Lakeland Mouldings, in the Lake District. Once the mould is made then the Otter sculpture will go into production.

The sculpture is the life size of a four to five month old Otter standing upright on his haunches. He’s surrounded by pebbles, shells and sand, and I’ve also added clam fossils to the base.

I lived on Shetland as a very small child, and it is still such a special place for me. There is a population of Eurasian Otters on Shetland, feeding in the rivers, lochs, and the sea.  

The sand I’ve used on the original sculpture actually comes from Spiggy beach on Shetland, where we used to play as children.

The Hillswick Wildlife Sanctuary cares for sick, injured and abandoned seals and Otters on Shetland. I will be donating an amount to them from each otter sculpture sold.

The sculpture will be produced as a limited edition in several different finishes. These will include cold-cast bronze, pewter and iron, as well as a hand painted version.

Erik is a life-sized otter cub and stands at about 14” tall. Although the stylised fur I add to my animal sculptures takes a very long time, I do enjoy it and I only have to do it on the original wax once. It is then reproduced through moulding and casting, locally to me in the English Lake District. I then polish or finish every Otter sculpture by hand each time one finds a home!

I have an ‘interested-but-no-obligation-to-purchase’ list for this Otter Sculpture which I will then use to offer the first 25 pieces at an introductory rate. If you’d like to be on the list, then please EMAIL me. I’m very much hoping that he will be finished shortly, and then he’ll be on his way to be moulded and put into production.

He’s a young Otter, and his name gives a nod to my Norse heritage, as well as connecting to my Grandfather (whose name was ‘Eric’). I also used to live on Shetland as a child and have very fond memories of it.

‘Harriet’ is an almost life-size Brown Hare. The original was sculpted by hand in modelling wax using traditional sculpting techniques. The 150 piece limited edition made from this original is produced by hand in batches.

How the Hare sculptures are made…

The original wax ‘Harriet’ took approximately two hundred hours to sculpt. It was then taken to Lakeland Mouldings (a local moulding and casting company) where it was moulded and a master was cast.

The limited edition pieces are cast to order in small batches in various finishes. After collection, they are finished by hand. This involves either polishing and waxing, applying a lacquer and a wax finish, or adding guilders paste waxes. All the Hare sculptures have enamelled eyes and are stamped with their edition number.
These large Hare Sculptures can live *outside in the garden or in your home (* if a final exterior lacquer is requested).
