My latest bespoke Gladiator helmet awards have arrived in the US!

A couple of years ago I was asked to make several bespoke awards for the huge company; General Electric.

I made their awards last year as well, and I’ve just sent another batch off this week to another company, this time in Florida.

These awards consist of a cold-cast metal (either bronze or pewter) Gladiator helmet (which I sculpted), which was then moulded and cast locally here in Cumbria.

I polish, wax and age the cast helmets, hand make the finishing escutcheons, then mount the helmets on stainless steel tubing supports which are sunk into blocks of Cumbrian sandstone. Drilling the holes is hard work, even with a pillar drill and a sharp drill bit, and I’ve now developed a good set of biceps…plus another skill!

I work with a local stone mason who cuts the stone and sandblasts the inscriptions for me, which I then hand paint.

Each award stands at about 30cm tall and weighs about 3kg! I hand make the internal packaging for each piece so that they don’t move during transit and this seems to be the key in shipping pieces (in one piece!) across the world…

Now that this order is complete, I have several Harriet Hare sculptures to polish and send out, as well as a few of my lichen design treasure boxes, and a few red squirrels!! It’s very good to be busy…
