‘Halcyon Days’ – Wall sculpture

Above is the larger ‘Halcyon Days’ wall sculpture (approx. 14”(35cm) in diameter). Here, I’ve hand cast it in a very fine and dense casting plaster. It is then decorated using bronze lacquer and verdigris paste.

Originating from Greek legend, the ‘Halcyon’ was a Kingfisher-like sea bird. It was believed to have the power to calm the seas around the ‘winter’ solstice, enabling it to safely make a nest and rear its young on still waters. Over the centuries the meaning of ‘Halcyon days’ has changed somewhat. It is now more associated with the Summer Solstice and a nostalgic view of the long hot summers in days gone by…
